The year 1911 was worse: ‘In 1911, 9 per cent of the total industrial population was involved in strikes of various length, as compared with 2.6 per cent for 1902, 1.4 per cent for 1907, and an average of 2.9 per cent for the period 1902–1911.’⁴ One of the reasons, and undoubtedly a major one, behind this general upsurge was the disparity between incomes and expenditure which badly affected many working people. A negligible increase in nominal wages had in no way compensated for a greater rise in prices, thus causing a decline in real wages and purchasing power.⁵ To quote Snowden again:
